If you’re one who enjoys “comfort food” and are around or are willing to drive to Indianola, you may want to put the Brickhouse Tavern on your short list. This was a place we discovered last year while we were checking out Indianola’s Town Square prior to the Indianola Balloon Classic.
The Brickhouse Tavern is located right on the Town Square — the day we discovered it they had a large portable patio (that appeared to be built on a large trailer) that provided additional seating, extending into the parking spaces of the square. Our girls loved eating outside and getting fresh air. We were protected from the sun by the large canopy at our table.
Their menu included some great appetizers, pizzas, several different hot dogs, and pasta dishes.
We’ve tried a number of items, although since we last dined recently, it appears their menu has been changed. Nevertheless, I’m hopeful it’s just as good as we’d experienced the two times we’d been there.
We started with their onion rings, which were tasty. Not the shoe string type here, they keep these ones nice and thick. They were a crowd pleaser with our large group.
We also shared their crab rangoon pizza starter. It was great — crispy wontons with cream cheese, topped with spicy Sriracha style sweet sauce, all on a thin pizza crust.
Both times we’ve eaten there, we’ve gotten their hot dogs. They use big, meaty, hotdogs, that are presumably a 1/4 pound. The dogs themselves had great flavor and the toppings were perfectly suited to each theme.
My brother went with their Cheese Burger Pizza. I was able to sneak a bite — it tasted like, you guessed it, a cheese burger. It was quite tasty — and he made short work of it.
My eldest daughter went with their Kids Mac ‘N Cheese, which I presume was Kraft Macaroni And Cheese, but it was right up her alley and she loved it.
We’ve been to the Brickhouse Tavern twice and enjoyed ourselves both times. Although there generally is a bit of time between us dining and then writing about the experience, it isn’t typical for the menu to change significantly. However, from what I can tell the menu has changed significantly and has been simplified. The menu seems smaller and many of the items we tried don’t appear on the new menu. I’d be interested in hearing whether the food is as good as we remember it being.
