Local originals. The old stand-by. When I walk into the Latin King, I get this vibe of past eras when people dressed up to go to dinner because it really was an occasion. Men in three piece suits and ladies in fit and flair dresses with crinolines. While the place has been updated since those old glory days its still got that special feel to it. This is one of the many reasons why I love it. Along with so many other people. Yep. The Latin King is well known and well loved around Des Moines, maybe even Iowa.
A place like this doesn’t last, since 1947, unless they nail some key elements. Service is definitely one of them. From the moment you walk through the revolving door, you are made to feel welcome and at home. Often times, the one welcoming you is the owner, Bob Tursi. The wait staff is fast and efficient but still warm and utterly friendly. They’ll gladly answer your questions and point you in the right direction on food or drinks.
The food is pretty stellar, too. From signature dishes like Chicken Spiedini to the Des Moines original Steak Duburgo, with all that garlicky butter and the perfectly prepared white mushroom on top, or any of the delicious pasta dishes. I’ve never had a bad dish and I have yet to meet anyone who’s ever tasted anything less than amazing at the Latin King. And of course, the tiramisu is incredibly creamy and moist. Its the tiramisu I judge all others by. In case you might want something to quench your thirst, they’ve got a great wine and cocktail list and a sommelier on staff to help you figure it all out.
Would I go back? Umm, yeah! In fact, I have… a lot. My whole family and lots of friends go there, too. We can’t stay away. Its just that kind of a place. Plenty of romance for a date night, plenty of room and service for a large group, and plenty of amazing food for everyone. The old stand-by. The local original that got it right all those years ago and kept it up. The dresses and suits may have changed but the ideals and the passion are still there and going strong.
