Oh that is crazy! Yes, we've often thought about how much fun we had that day in Iowa City and would love to return. What a cool area.
Cupcakes. Who doesn’t love ‘em?! Well, I’m sure there are people out there who don’t but I don’t think I’ve ever met them and I’m pretty sure I don’t want to. Ok, that was harsh, but I really love cupcakes. I love the the imagination that cupcakes foster and the craziness that turns to pure genius when baked in a little paper cup. Molly’s Cupcakes in Iowa City does not lack in either imagination or genius.
The first flavor we tried was the Peanut Butter Nutella. Holy nut spread deliciousness! The cake was soft, crumbly, and light. The buttercream was whipped perfection. The combo of peanut butter and Nutella was lovely. This cupcake did not lack in flavor but wasn’t overbearing either.
The other flavor we tried was Chocolate Decadence and decadent it definitely was! Soft and light cake, chocolate pudding filling, luscious chocolate ganache frosting, and topped with chocolate shavings. This one was a chocoholic’s dream come true. Enter my husband: a chocoholic from a long line of chocoholics. Let’s just say, he’s got a real problem and no intention of doing anything about it other than eating more chocolate. He loved this cupcake. I barely got a bite of this one.
Molly’s offers some other desserts as well. They looked very appealing, but we were on a cupcake mission. I am a firm beleiver that dessert is in large part eaten with your eyes, though and Molly’s did a great job of satisfying that part of my appetite.
Everything looked lovely and delicious. Eclairs, chocolate covered strawberries, and cupcakes all executed beautifully. When you are greeted with views like this, you can’t help but want to try one of everything.
Molly’s also offers the “create your own” cupcake where you choose which cake and frosting to pair up and then let your creativity run rampant at the sprinkle station. This concept only added to the whimsy of the place. It was another genius moment that really showed this place totally gets it.
Just to really drive home this whole whimsical, bring-out-the-child-in-everyone feel, Molly’s has these crazy “swing” seats at the counter. They are tethered at the bottom so you can’t take out any unsuspecting cupcake devourers while you relive your playground days, but the spirit of it all is evident. I couldn’t resist and quickly found myself “swinging” carefree. In case you aren’t ready to really let loose, they also have your standard, firmly planted seating in chairs or booths.
Molly’s Cupcakes is a great little cupcake or dessert shop right in the heart of the university area of Iowa City. Its a wonderful place to stop in for a sweet treat, pour on some sprinkles, get the creativity flowing, and swing away your cares for a bit.
Love the review! I want to go back:) You know what....after we got back that day, my husband said you went to Molly's Cupcakes? Umm...yeah? Come to find out his distant cousin in the owner - who knew?
Visiting Molly's in the fall was a blast. I don't even like cupcakes and that creme brulee cupcake was fantastic. Probably my favorite cupcake I've ever had.
